IOCC began its work in Ethiopia in 2003, partnering closely with the Ethiopian Orthodox Church Development and Inter-church Aid Commission (EOC-DICAC). In its 20 years operating in Ethiopia, IOCC has worked in cooperation with EOC-DICAC, international and local NGOs, and various ministries, including the ministries of Health, Education, and Agriculture, and provided humanitarian and development assistance to communities throughout the country.
Project Description/Position overview 
The primary purpose of the MHNT Midwife position is to be responsible for the day-to-day implementation of the mobile health and nutrition services under the team by giving high emphasis to health education to communities on maternal and child health and also family planning services, safe motherhood and child health consultation such as antenatal, delivery, postnatal and essential new born services, Iron supplementation, facilitation of vaccinations, identification of high risk mothers and facilitation of referral and counseling, exclusive breast feeding. In addition, the position holder is also expected to provide supervision, technical assistance and capacity building to health extension workers and health workers in health facilities. She/he will be responsible for the daily implementation of mobile health and nutrition services package as per the standard, supporting health facilities assigned as integrated mobile health and nutrition modality and daily dispensary and drug supply management. He will also be responsible for day-to-day documentation of all provided services accordingly and compile weekly and monthly reports and share with MHNT Medical Officer.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Improve basic preventive health care at community level in line with public health emergency management with emphasis health especially preventing maternal and newborn deaths.
  • Conduct and undertake family health services.
  • Provide antenatal care (ANC), postnatal care (PNC), child delivery, and essential newborn care.
  • Provide iron supplementation, TT vaccine, and counseling.
  • Strengthen early referrals mechanism all obstetrics complications and other maternal and child health illnesses.
  • Ensure all referral cases are properly transported to the nearest or woreda capital health facility based on the availability of ambulance and seriousness of the illness.
  • Manage sick children according to integrated management of childhood illness (IMNCI) and Integrated Community Case Management (iCCM) guideline.
  • Strengthen linkages and coordination mechanisms between community and the Woreda health bureaus.
  • Train and support healthcare workers (HWs) and health extension workers (HEWs) on how to provide quality maternal and child health services.
  • Train and support community-based volunteer health workers for the implementation of the community component of the project.
  • Conduct planning and promotion of awareness creation on nutrition and preventative health care issues in the community.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.

Job Requirements

 

Qualifications 

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in midwifery and with valid registration/practicing license.
  • Experience: At least two years of experience in the field out of which one year non-government organization (NGO) experience in the field is preferred. Experienced working at the primary health care unit (Health center) at the MCH department and labor wards.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA): Good written and spoken communication skills in the local language. Extremely flexible, able to work independently, and can cope with stressful situations. Ability and willingness to work in remote and potentially insecure environments.
  • Competencies: Ability to work in a team; sensitivity to cultural conditions and practices; tenacity in observing procedures, regulations, and other requirements in implementing and maintaining IOCC programs; and make appropriate recommendations.
