JOB PURPOSE

The World Food Programme (WFP) is United Nations frontline agency in the fight against hunger, WFP is continually responding to emergencies. We save lives by getting food to the hungry fast. However, WFP also works to help prevent hunger in the future. We do this through programmes that use food as a means to build assets, spread knowledge and nurture stronger, more dynamic communities. This helps communities become more food secure. On average, WFP aims to bring food assistance to more than 80 million people in 80 countries.

 

WFP Ethiopia is working with the government and other humanitarian partners to strengthen the resilience of Ethiopia’s most vulnerable population and to chart a more prosperous and sustainable future for the next generation.

 

In Ethiopia despite some progress made over the past decade, malnutrition remains a public health Problem. The prevalence of malnutrition varies widely across the regions and socio-economic groups. According to DHIS 2019 findings, seven percent of Ethiopian children under five years of age and 35.5 percent of women (15 to 19 years) have signs of acute malnutrition. The prevalence of stunting (37percent), which costs at least sixteen percent of the national gross domestic product, yearly.

 

A multiplicity of problems and challenges in Ethiopia remain the lack of tangible support for nutrition interventions Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) by health facilities and local government officials, poor coverage of many nutrition interventions, including management of acute malnutrition and opportunities to integrate nutrition interventions into all possible contacts with service providers are missed, which limits coverage and impact.

 

Integrating Management of Moderate Acute Malnutrition is a strategy that focuses on the integration of the management of acute malnutrition into the on-going routine health services at all levels of the health infrastructure.

 

To provide support and technical assistance to the Ministry of Health at national level in the implementation of Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition to strengthen institutional capacity to manage MAM treatment effectively. S/He will be responsible for managing, facilitating, monitoring, supervision, and reporting of IMAM implementation. S/He is going to be responsible to build the coordination and collaboration of WFP, Ministry of Health and relevant partners.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

1.    Under the overall supervision of the Ministry of Health, Nutrition Coordination office and the technical supervision of the WFP nutrition team the nutrition technical assistant will take the overall responsibility for the management and coordination of (IMAM) activities at national level.
2.    Prepare the national level work plan and support the regions in the preparation of the regional workplan and its implementation
3.    Prepare and provide progress report on activities every month to WFP and the MOH
4.    Provide technical support to all the regional Technical Assistants at the regional Bureau of Health assist in the implementation of MAM treatment in the health system/Health post level.
5.    Provide management support to the regional Technical Assistants to ensure the improvement of IMAM implementation at woreda/health facility level are performed within the established targets, policies, and procedures as per the national acute malnutrition guideline.
6.    Make field visits to the regions and woreda level to supervise and identify challenges in the programme implementation to take timely corrective actions and recommend possible solutions.
7.    Organize Training of Trainers at national level when it is needed and work with the regional Technical Assistants in cascading to the regional and woreda level.
8.    In discussion with the regions, MOH and relevant authorities at regional level ensure the appropriate utilization of nutritious supplies provided by WFP
9.    Act as a point of contact for resolution of a range of operational queries and problems with regards to the MAM treatment activities
10.    Coordinate over all TSFP activities with staff of UNICEF and RHB as well as DRMC to ensure effective implementation in the region
11.    Assist the woredas and zonal nutrition focal in the IMAM implementing areas to ensure all indicators relevant to TSFP are captured in the health system, and relevant data is collected and analysed.
12.    Coordinate and communicate with regional RHB, DRMC and WFP to ensure efficient delivery of the programme and perform analysis.
13.    Ensure annual National and regional review meetings are conducted as per the plan and budget allocation
14.    Facilitate financial requests and settlement as per the planned activity and budget
15.    Closely work with Ethiopian Food and Drug Administration (EFDA) regarding MAM supplies handling, management and engage on transition plan of MAM supplies into health system
16.    Prepare and share monthly, quarterly, and annual reports are submitted to ministry of health and WFP
17.    Facilitate or participate in evaluations, assessments and operational studies that are conducted in relation to the programme

Standard Minimum Qualifications

Education:    A Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Human Nutrition, Community Nutrition, Public Health Nutrition, Food Science and Nutrition, Public Health, and other related disciplines

Experience:  At least 1 Year experience with a bachelor’s degree in Management of Acute Malnutrition in Ethiopia.
Previous work experience with the government of Ethiopia’s National Nutrition Program (NNP), Food and Nutrition Strategy and Community-based management of acute malnutrition (CMAM)
Specialized knowledge on the management of acute malnutrition as well as managing emergency nutrition programmes

 

Language: Fluent in English language

  • Proven ability to work with multiple partners on collaborative projects.
  • Fluency in both oral and written communication in English required. Knowledge of the duty place and local language is an added advantage.
