Job description
.
Saint Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC) in collaboration with Vision Aid Overseas (VAO) is looking for qualified Optometrists to hire on a short-term contract-base. The Optometrists are responsible to perform refraction and prescribe eyeglasses for refractive errors; diagnosis and manage eye conditions at hospital and field level; work with parents/guardians, schoolteachers and others involved in the management of School eye Health, work as an eye care team that’s involved in the prevention of blindness at base hospital. As well, they will be engaged in the school eye health activities of SPHMMC and Vision Aid Overseas project implementation areas.
The optometrists should have attention to details and be able to treat all kinds of patients with kindness and discretion, from young children to the elderly. Note that to be considered for this position, the applicants need to be licensed Optometrists.
Job description (Specific)
• Performs comprehensive eye and vision tests with all due care
• Diagnose defects of the eye, such as myopia, astigmatism, and glaucoma
• Provides personalized temporary and permanent solutions to sight issues based on each client’s specific case and medical history
• Prescribes medications, eyeglasses and other eye care/managements
• Advises clients/patients on proper eye care techniques
• Keeps updated and accurate medical records for all clients/patients
• Books next appointments in cases where re-examination is required
• Trains patients on how to use and maintain their eyeglasses
• Works with the Mobile Eye Health Clinic (MEC) in targeted Primary Schools to ensure eye health accessibility
• Participates in community mobilization and sensitization activities
• Refers cases who need further investigation and care to SPHMMC (those identified by the MEC)
• Distributes prescribed eyeglasses to children identified by MEC
• Refers to eye doctors and ophthalmologists when patients need to undergo a surgery or in cases of severe eye injuries – Patients visited the Out-patient-Department (OPD)
• Be able to explain medical terms simply and calmly, gives attention to details

Job requirements
Required professional experience
• Experience:
o 2 years’ work experience as an Optometrist
o Having community level eye health experience is an asset
o In-depth understanding of eye conditions and vision defects
o Hands-on experience with eye examination tools, such as ophthalmoscope, tonometer, phoropter, Snellen chart, Auto-refractor, ophthalmoscope etc.
• Educational qualification
o BSc in Optometry
o Has accredited professional license.
o Certificates/trainings of participation in related professional capacity developments
• Additional Skills required
o Have basics of computer skills (MS Offices – Word, Excel & PPT) and operating accessories
• Salary
o 15,000 ETB
