Junior Researcher: Laboratory Logistics and Quality Management

The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was founded in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations seconded by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. The Institute got its name from the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae). AHRI is a biomedical research institute that works in developing tools for prevention, control and treatment of mycobacterium and other diseases of public healthy importance through applied and basic biomedical research and training.

The Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases (MNTD) Division in AHRI run several projects in collaboration with local and international organizations. To create a conducive ground for national and international laboratory quality accreditation and bridge the division with the local and foreign procurement stakeholders, the MNTD Division would like to hire qualified candidate in the position of Junior Researcher (Laboratory Logistics and Quality Assurance) for the projects within the Malaria Team.

Key Duties and responsibilities

1.       Ensure compliance with relevant regulations and standards for laboratory management and quality assurance.

2.       Monitor the lab quality practices and store operations to ensure adherence to standard operating procedures.

3.       Prepare laboratory SOPs, update the existing ones, and follow up its proper implementation

4.       Update, revise, and maintain the Laboratory’s Quality Assurance Manual, Standard Operating Procedures, and other quality documents in the laboratory.

5.       Supervise continuous recording of lab log book for each lab activity

6.       Implement and maintain efficient systems for tracking reagents inventory levels, ensuring accurate stock counts, and minimizing wastage.

7.       Oversee the logistics process, including receiving and distributing laboratory supplies to various teams within the department and field teams.

8.       In collaboration with project coordinators and senior researchers, prepare procurement specifications, communicate with suppliers, develop and maintain relationships with suppliers to negotiate affordable pricing terms

9.       procurement team and follow up the timely delivery of the ordered items

10.   Compile and update the procurement master file

11.   Ensure the smooth running of the laboratory store; while maintaining strict adherence to quality assurance protocols.

12.   Procurement order processing and follow up the import of laboratory supplies and equipment with the procurement team, ensure the safe deliver of all the ordered items as per the specification

13.   Ensure the laboratory supplies and equipment quantities are as per the order list when stock is in, and report to the concerned project coordinator when there is a deviation between actual quantity and order list

14.   Provide shipment sign-off whenever requested by suppliers

15.   Receive samples from the field and manage sample inventory as per the sample inventory log designed for this purpose

16.   Follow up lab equipment with regular calibration status, make ready equipment and communicate for calibration, document the calibration results, and ensure the calibration correction factor is implemented.

17.   Work closely with the inventory management officer during the stock in and stock out of consumables for different lab activities

18.   Attend any meeting and training with the main laboratory focal persons as quality focal person of the department.

19.  Perform any assignments given by the PI, Project Manager and lab coordinator

Required qualifications and work experience

Education: A Bachler Degree in Medical Laboratory Science/Technology

Work experience and competencies:

ü  Zero year work experience

ü  In-depth knowledge of laboratory management practices, quality assurance protocols

ü  Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to interact with various stakeholders effectively.

ü  Proficiency in using computer skills preferably any laboratory information management software

ü  Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively in a fast-paced environment.

ü  Fluency in English communication (spoken & written)

ü  Willingness to be multi-tasked in lab logistics and lab quality management

Duty station: Addis Ababa

Required number: 1 (one)

Salary: ETB 10,386.00

Term of employment: one year contract period with full time employment basis with possibility of extension based on performance and budget availability
