Introduction

About JDC: For over 109 years, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) has supported some of the world’s most vulnerable populations in 70 countries by offering immediate relief and helping communities grow their own capacity to respond to challenges that lie ahead. JDC began working in Ethiopia in August 1983, striving to advance the health and wellbeing of those living in Ethiopia.

About The Spine Program:

Established in 2006 by JDC’s medical director, Dr. Rick Hodes and in partnership with Ethiopian Ministry of Health, the JDC Spine Program has been providing care for 9,500+ Ethiopian spine deformity patients throughout the country. We have operated on 1,350+ patients in Ghana, India, USA and Ethiopia.Since 2021, JDC is working on strengthening the local capacity to perform spine surgeries in Ethiopia by trained Ethiopian surgeons.

About The Spine Fellowship:

In partnership with Ganga Hospital in Coimbatore, India, we’re sponsoring surgeons for a 1-year Spine Fellowship Program.

The fellowship provides extensive exposure to clinical problems and ample opportunities for surgical training. The fellows have Clinical and Research activities along with the responsibility of maintaining accurate and systematic documentation of clinical cases. Hands-on surgical training is offered under supervision and guidance.
There are three units in Ganga Hospital, Orthopedics Spine unit lead by three senior consultants. Annually there are more than 2,900 spine procedures done in these units. All types of spinal procedures are done by the unit including complex paediatric and adult spine deformity surgeries, minimally invasive spine surgery, spinal tumours and infection surgery, endoscopic spine surgery and revision surgeries. The consultants have abundance experience with more than 200 peer reviewed articles and have written multiple chapters for numerous spine books. The consultants are keen to teach and share their experiences. The hospital is equipped with state of the art operation theatre.
The grant will only cover the duration of study in India for 1 person,  basic accommodation, and basic living costs. We do not pay salary.

What are the requirements?

  • An interest to become a spine surgeon and commitment to provide care for Ethiopia patients
  • A motivation letter
  • A Valid Ethiopian Medical License
  • Speciality certificate in Orthopedics or Neurosurgery
  • Letter of good standing from licensing authority
  • Valid passport, at least until March 2025
  • The surgeon will be expected to return to Ethiopia and perform surgeries in country upon completion of fellowship.
