The conflict in Tigray has resulted in massive breakdown of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) services across the region. Resources coming to Tigray are inadequate to meet the demands on the ground, and the WASH situation has been alarming since partners are struggling to meet the minimum standards due to limited resources. Currently, there are about 20 WASH partners working in the Shire area. UNICEF, being the WASH Cluster Lead, is expected to provide leadership role to enable timely and well-coordinated response. The intern will support WASH response in this L3 emergency location and will assist to coordinate, manage and provide rapid and effective responses for WASH emergencies.

How can you make a difference?

Under the supervision of WASH Specialist NO-C based in Shire, the intern will undertake the following tasks:

  • Provide support in effective coordination mechanisms between all WASH humanitarian partners at Shire level and with the national WASH cluster/coordination platform are in place, including effective links, communication, and information management.
  • Provide support in effective implementation of a monitoring plan to follow up the implementation of UNICEF’s response in WASH sector, incorporating required changes into WASH-specific activities, with special attention to ensure equitable and inclusive provision of services among internally displaced peoples, refugees and host communities.
  • Through the guidance of the WASH Specialist coordinate with government and partners in the different stages of the program implementation, following up on recommendations and other UNICEF commitments, including capacity development to national partners.
  • Compile, analyze and keep up-to-date information on humanitarian WASH partners, their capacities and interventions at [sub-national level] (including Who, What, Where and When) and provide consolidated reports as feedback to partners and for the national WASH cluster/coordination platform.
  • Assist with WASH outcome reporting and effective information sharing to demonstrate the closing of gaps.
  • When necessary, highlight specific issues for the attention of the Tigray WASH cluster coordinator and cluster partners to ensure priority and corrective measures are taken
  • Provide technical support in WASH facilities design and construction supervision

Job requirements

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • He or she should be enrolled at a university in Ethiopia at the undergraduate or graduate level or be a recent graduate (within the past two years) in Public Health, Water Engineering, or related technical field is required.
  • Candidates that were enrolled in full time university studies in Tigray for a first (bachelor’s) degree prior to 2020 and who would have graduated in 2020, 2021 or 2022 in normal circumstances, are eligible. This covers all students who were enrolled and had their schooling interrupted. Please make a note of these details in your application cover letter, if applicable
  • Knowledge of relevant computer systems and applications; excellent knowledge of MS Office is required.
  • Fluency in English is required.
