The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was founded in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations seconded by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. The Institute got its name from the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae). AHRI is a biomedical research      institute that works in developing tools for prevention, control and treatment of mycobacterium and other diseases of public healthy importance through applied and basic biomedical research and training.

Adama Lund University Research Site (ALURS) would like to hire a qualified candidate for the position of  Laboratory technician for Research Biological sample management for our office in Adama.

Position  

Laboratory technician for Research Biological sample management

Education & Experience

Diploma or BSC in laboratory technology with one (1) year work experience in health-related field

The role of the Laboratory technician 

The laboratory technologist shall be based in the AHRI-Adama Lund University Research site and work closely with the project researchers, coordinator, data manger, study site and regional laboratory technologists on the proper and timely management of biological samples of health research cohorts.

Duties and Responsibilities for sample management  

–      Follow and adhere AHRI’s and study protocol rules and regulations for research biological specimen management

–      Receive samples from the study sites and store in freezers per the biological sample storage protocol

–      Cross-check the laboratory request form with the sample tubes for proper labeling with study ID/code (labeled with a Barcode)

–      Provide prompt corrective measures if sample received from the study sites is not of acceptable quality and volume according to the research protocol

–      Refer to the date the specimen was collected and study participants visit

–      Register specimen code, date of collection and date received and mark ‘√‘specimen type at the appropriate Lab logbook for the corresponding Health facility and follow-up time points.

–      Communicate with the study site data collectors and lab technologists for any miss labeling and missing biological specimens

–      Register each sample properly to the ‘’storage protocol’’ in both hard and soft copy forms

–      Make sure that the sample ID in the box matches to the sample ID recorded in the storage protocol

–      Ensure that all samples are stored at – 80 °C with proper labeling on sample racks with the consecutive study codes

–      Put laboratory request forms in folders for the corresponding Health facility and follow-up time points

–      Monitor site laboratories are performing the research samples as per the research SOP

–      Enter laboratory data to REDCap database and manage records for all tests

–      Generate laboratory test reports

–      Perform laboratory tests as required and provide technical support (upon training)

–      Prepare and request laboratory consumables

–      Monitor refrigerators deep freezers regularly

–      Perform any related activities as per the demand of the project

–      Prepare periodic report on quality of biological samples delivered to the laboratories

–      Sort samples from freezers when required for analysis

–      Closely work with the project/research team, field coordinator and site lab coordinators to execute the smooth conduct of the project
