Job Description

The Center for Innovative Drug Development and Therapeutic Trials for Africa (CDT-Africa) is established at the College of Health Sciences, Addis Ababa University with a support from the World Bank as Africa center of excellence for education and research to build endogenous capacity to address the development challenge posed by poor access to medicines (drugs, vaccines and diagnostics) in Africa. Leishmania Biobank research project, one of the project’s under CDT-Africa, is now looking to hire a competent laboratory assistant who can contribute to the center.

The Role of the Laboratory Assistant

The successful applicant will be responsible for management of L-BioBank and will assist in specimen collection under guidance of the Project Lead Scientist, and CDT-Africa Centre Lead.

Principal responsibilities

  • Work closely with the researchers in L-BioBank project to plan and co-ordinate study activities.
  • Responsible for design, implementation and curation of L-BioBank activities.
  • Will be responsible for development and write-up of Standard Operating Procedures (SoPs) concerning archival, retrieval and cataloguing of specimens.
  •  Will manage the BioBank Unit at Sefere Selam campus.
  •  Will manage the data base concerning the leishmania biobank.
  •  Generate documentation in compliance with Quality Systems and Good Laboratory Practices
  •  Identifies potential problems early in a project and implementation phase and makes suggestions on how to resolve them while keeping key deadlines in mind
  • Maintain laboratory notebooks
  • Ensure standards and the quality of laboratory procedures by strictly following the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Adhere to biosafety measures adopted in the laboratory, minding the safety of oneself and others
  • Facilitate to maintenance of established system of organized record keeping and information management for timely delivery of results, data collection, analysis and reporting for laboratory monitoring and facilitation to operational research.
  • Facilitate in maintenance of laboratory equipment in good working order and operate equipment appropriately following SOPs.
  •  Take additional tasks as directed by the immediate supervisor or Centre Lead.

Terms and conditions

  •  Hours of work: are governed by the laws of Ethiopia. However, the nature of the work is such that it might require working overtime and weekends, with due financial compensation.
  • Holidays: are governed by the rules of Addis Ababa University for project workers.
  • Length of contract: this is a one-year contract subject to six monthly contract renewal.
  • Probationary period and notice period: there is a three-month probationary period for this role. The notice period is one month.

Job Requirements

Skills Required:

  • Clinical Laboratory training and experience
  • Computer and software use skills (word, excel, etc.)

Requirements

  • BSc in Medical Laboratory Technology
  •  At least one year of clinical experience
  • Discretion and ability to handle confidential and sensitive information
  •  Computer program literacy and knowledge
  • Administrative and organizational skills.
